New Bracken House

Posted by Chris Hinton at 11:02 on 15 February 2019

Shine are proud to have been a part of the catering installation at the most prestigious catering project New Bracken House, London EC4

Client , Obayashi Corporation commissioned John Robertson Architectsto undertake the refurbishment of Bracken House in the City of London. Originally designed by Albert Richardson in the early 1950s as the headquarters of the Financial Times, the ‘H’ shaped building underwent a dramatic reconstruction in the late 1980’s by Michael Hopkins and Partners. After a quarter of a century of use, John Robertson Architects is sensitively refurbishing the Grade II* listed building ready for occupation in 2018 as the newspaper is to move back to former headquarters in 2019, almost three decades after relocating to Southwark.

The design accommodates 18,600 sqm of office space, an enlarged entrance hall, new internal courtyards and a roof garden with running track.

Humble Arnold Associates catering specification combined with Shine Catering Systems expertise in catering installations are realised in a state of the art catering facility. High function combined with stunning decorative finishes allow the realisation of the caterers to be fulfilled.

Ambach cook suite, Halton canopies, Proline servery counters, Foster coldroom suite and refrigerated cabinets , Winterhalter dishwashers and Trak Systems dishwash handling system along with Shine’s in house fabrication, own project management and installation reflect the high specification demanded by the design team at the FT.

Challenges encountered and overcome through the design, co ordination and installation period were;

·         the multi facetted design of the counter was a key factor in Shine and Proline being awarded the contract as we had to demonstrate our ability to work with the Financial Times and main contractor design teams to an exacting complex design. We have fulfilled our promise and delivered a stunning work of act, that is both beautiful and functional.

·         Our PM Mike Coxford had to integrate the catering installation to the demands of a complicated structural building programme as the main hoists were removed 5 months prior to the catering installation so early specification and technical sign off needed to be achieved to allow heavy and bulky items to be delivered within programme restrictions.

Coordination with the M & E contractor needed a multi consultant and coordinated design coordination process to be undertaken  allowing the Halton M.A.R.V.E.L system to work in harmony with the BMS supply and extract fans.
